Double honour for Dr Rohana Kuruppu CText FTI –
Member of Council from Sri Lanka
Dr Rohana Upendra Kuruppu was the first Textile Technologist to be conferred National Honours by the President of Sri Lanka at the investiture of national honours held on 14th November 2005. He was recommended for this award, which is known as ‘Lanka Thilaka’, by the Textile Institute Sri Lanka Section for meritorious service rendered to Sri Lanka, particularly with respect to textile education.
On 28 November 2005, the Degree of Doctor of Technology (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Dr Kuruppu by the Open University of Sri Lanka for the outstanding contribution he had made to the Textile Industry in general and textile education in particular.
Dr Kuruppu studied textile technology at Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education, UK (now Derby University), where he was awarded the Albert Thompson Memorial Prize for outstanding success in textile studies, and achieved the Licentiateship of the Textile Institute and Full Technological Certificate in Weaving from City & Guilds of London Institute in 1978. Subsequently he gained his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Clothing Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, and then his MSc in Textiles from the University of Strathclyde, UK, where he was awarded the Cunningham Medal for excellent performance in postgraduate studies in textiles in 1982. He became a Chartered Associate of the Textile Institute in 1987 and was awarded his Fellowship in 1997. He is currently the Managing Director of Brandix College of Clothing Technology, Ratmalana, Sri Lanka.
Dr Kuruppu has been active member of The Textile Institute and in particular the Sri Lanka Section for many years. He is an immediate past Chairman of the Section and a valued member of Council.
