Design Competition

The Textile Institute and the Pentland Group are pleased to announce the winners in an exciting new UK design competition for innovative use of textiles in apparel, footwear and accessories.

The finals of the Textile Institute Pentland Design Awards took place on the 8 th December 2004 at The American Intercontinental University on Marylebone High St. The judges had the opportunity to see the finalists work on the catwalk and to hear them talk about the inspiration behind their work. The Pentland Group generously sponsored the final, which was part of the TI London South East Section Christmas Social, and we thank the AIU for the use of the venue, RMK for sponsoring the make-up and Basia Szkutnicka and her team for the show production.

There were five finalists, three in the Apparel category and two in Footwear and Accessories. The standard of work was extremely high and the judges had a hard time deciding on the winners. The winner of each category received £500, a three-month placement at the Pentland Group and a years free membership of the Textile Institute.

The judges were
Katie Greenyer from the Pentland Group
Rose Sinclair of the Sinclair Consultancy
Phillipa Watkins from WGSN
Clare Prince from New Look

The competition aims to explore the key role of textiles in the creation of innovative and commercially viable design. The competition was open to all UK final year students and recent graduates (within 2 years) of undergraduate higher education programmes in fashion, clothing, footwear and accessory design and to other related disciplines such as knitwear and textiles where there is an end product that can be worn.

The competition was designed to require the minimum of additional work for students who are interested in participating by enabling them to enter the course work that they are completing with a few minor additions to meet the objectives of the competition. These are:

  • To explore the key role of textiles in the creation of innovative and commercially viable design
  • To raise awareness of the role of the Textile Institute in supporting all areas of the clothing, footwear and textile industries
  • To provide opportunities for graduates to gain experience with the Pentland Group
