SUMMARY:Keep It Real: Is Fashion Technology the same as Garment Technology?
DESCRIPTION:Venue: Engineering Building A\, Booth Street East Manchester M13\, University of Manchester \nDate: Monday 20 February 2023 \nTime: 10:00-14:00 hrs GMT \nA small informal event for like-minded people from fashion technology educational institutions to meet in Manchester to discuss the current and future direction of research informed teaching in garment technology (and we use this phrase specifically here so that we may contrast the 2 descriptors). The intention is to use 2 contrasting approaches to pattern engineering and garment technology education to stimulate debate around the nature of fashion technology as taught currently and hopefully help define some common goals for future direction in this area. \nClick here to register for free.

SUMMARY:E-Textiles Network Webinar – Designing Wearable Smart Garments for Sustainable Production
DESCRIPTION:Format of the event: Online \nDate: Monday 20 February 2023 \nTime: 13:30 hrs GMT \nThis webinar will explore challenges\, considerations\, and potential solutions for the practical design of Smart Garments through the case study of an ongoing Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project between the Manchester Fashion Institute and Manchester Metropolitan University\, and a UK-based sportswear company\, Kymira Ltd. \nThe presenter\, Aaron Zidichouski\, is tasked with moving the prototype Smart Garments to production-ready design and helping define the production process. Through this project\, design challenges have presented themselves through meeting end-user requirements\, sourcing manufacturing partners with capability to handle electronics integration\, and incoming sustainability and circularity requirements from WRAP 2030. Though the project is far from complete\, there are many useful learnings to share with the E-Textiles Network. \nClick here for more information and registration.

SUMMARY:FUTURE TEXTILES CONFERENCE 2023
DESCRIPTION:Format of the conference: Enterprise Building on UWE Frenchay Campus\, Bristol and online \nDate: 28 February – 2 March 2023 \nTextiles are so ubiquitous\, yet their functions have not been changed much since the dawn of civilization. Additionally\, textiles have received widespread attention as a versatile platform in recent years for future wearable electronics applications. However\, they are still far from the requirements of modern-day electronics. \nThe global textile industry is also often cited as the second most polluting industry after oil\, responsible for ~8-10% of global CO2 emission\, ~20% water pollution and ~35% microplastic pollution. \nTherefore\, radically new approaches are needed at both materials and manufacturing level to transform textiles into highly innovative\, sustainable\, and intelligent clothing. \nThis conference will provide a forum for collaborative discussions to address such key challenges at both academic and industry level to develop future clothing for the next generation and facilitate the rapid transition of such textiles from lab to market. \nClick here for more information and registration.
