The Textile Institute is pleased to highlight Special Techniques of Natural Dyeing using Mordants and Modifiers, a new publication by Padma Shree Vankar and Dhara Shukla, published by Elsevier as part of The Textile Institute Book Series.

Due for publication on 7 September 2026, the book explores the use of specialised auxiliaries to improve the colourfastness, colour depth and sustainability of naturally dyed fabrics, with an emphasis on maintaining low-carbon approaches to textile dyeing.

The publication examines the chemistry and application of mordants and modifiers used in natural dyeing. Topics covered include traditional mordants, bio-mordants, transition metal salts and rare earth salts, alongside a range of modifiers and auxiliaries designed to improve colour adherence. A dedicated chapter also considers post-mordanting treatments using amino compounds.

The book considers how mordants and other dyeing auxiliaries can be used more sustainably, while exploring techniques for achieving vibrant and durable colours from flowers and other locally available plant materials.
