‘What we learnt from the Spider – How biomimicry unlocks the future of biomaterials’
This presentation explores how the “350 million years of R&D” of the humble spider is revolutionising material science, and offering us sustainable solutions to current petrochemical-based and high-energy processes. Drawing upon our work at Spintex, we will examine how replicating the spider’s unique spinning mechanism provides a sustainable toolbox to produce high-performance materials with applications in everything from fashion to aerospace. We will address the science of spider biomimicry, and the benefits and challenges found in biomimetic technologies, whilst exploring the gap between initial biological inspiration and the industrial and economic realities of bringing these novel materials to market.
